Hello again beautiful people! Today’s article we are going to talk about sustainability and how do florists support and maintain sustainability. Basically we would like to encourage people especially women through this article.
“Sustainable Development is a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” – Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland, 1897g. In an easier way, sustainability encourages people and businesses to make decisions based on long term and how to develop businesses without threatening our environment and our future generations. Pretty sure, you all don’t want our generations to suffer, right? The more we take care of our earth, the cleaner the air. The cleaner the air, the longer we live. As simple as that, we do actually know why we must take care of our earth and its environment.
Based on the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development, there are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are being implemented since 2016 and Florists are actually implementing 3 of the 17 SDGs, such as good health & well being, environmental friendly, and gender equality. Florists do what they do not only as a business, but it is one of the way to reduce pollution that could cause damage to health and the earth’s atmosphere. In additional, in regards of health, flowers have aesthetic importance in our life. For example, psychologically when flowers are given to the people in rehabilitation centre or to your loved ones, in general it makes them happy which is good for their health.
Second, as we concerned about our environmental sustainability and to support the movement of plastic free, most florists including us, are trying to lesser the use of plastic a.k.a plastic-free flowers. In replace, we would like to try to use butcher paper. And through these simple changes, it creates a demand for more sustainable practices. Another example of sustainable floristry is through dried flowers. The fact that dried flowers are made and everlasting, is because some flowers are meant to last for a short period and their availability is only a particular period of time and to preserve as well as maintain its beauty, we dried it.
Last but not the least, gender equality which means men and women have equal power and opportunites. For example, financially. In a way to achieve gender equality, we as a florists are empowering women through our floral business. We want you girls to see us as an example that women are able to develop ourselves individually and financially independent. (And of course, no offence to all the boys who read this ? )
As a closing, we would like to appreciate every single one of you who supports as a local florist. Without you knowing, you are implementing sustainability, as said by a woman named Chelsea, “Buying locally is always going to be more sustainable. You’re supporting your local economy and that is so, so important”.
Have a nice day, beautiful!
